A to Z Challenge 2010 (6/26 to go)

15 Jun

I wanna try this. Andrea (@Smexy_A on Twitter) introduced this to me =). Apparently you have to pick a category from Title, Author or Title and Author. For each letter in the alphabet, read a book with a title or author’s last name starting with that letter. So 26 books for Title or Author, and 26*2 for Title and Author.

Already half of the year has gone by, so I’m not sure if I can complete it. I don’t even know if I want to use the books I’ve already read this year, I don’t even know if I can remember them all, though that would definitely make this job easier. I wanna go with Title first, if I have time perhaps I’ll do Author too. I changed my mind; there is probably a better chance of completing this list if I go with Author.

Wish me luck!

Lazying, Errands & Kungfu Panda 2

30 Jun

So I woke up at 12 noon today, having slept at 4:30 in the morning last night reading Astonishing X-Men. How could I not?? After that epic conversation about the X-Men universe at Ajiten after watching X-Men: First Class with Amy and Krista, I got curious. I was at the library yesterday and picked up a few volumes (do they call it volumes in the comic universe?) of X-Men that Joss Whedon wrote. And I gotta say, Joss Whedon is such an amazing storyteller. So far everything I’ve seen and/or read by him has been amazingly well-constructed and well-written. Hats off to such a talented man.

Because I slept so late I had headaches for the first few hours after waking up. This happens to me often, mostly always because of a lack of regular sleep patterns though. It’s hard not having school and a job to mediate that for you =/.

My mom left the house around 1:30pm, and so I had some time to get myself up and awake. I used it to browse the internet… Man, kind of a waste lol. But I didn’t have the mind to do anything else, so I dilly-dallyed until 4pm, when I left to do a bunch of errands.

First errand was to deposit the check I got in the mail yesterday. It was for that once in a lifetime “job opportunity” that I think I might very well never get again. So what happened was back in mid-October of last year, I was invited to my friend Stephanie’s brother’s high school graduation party. I met a lady named Terri while I was there, and I found out that Terri’s family were going to adopt a Chinese toddler from the Heilongjiang province of northeastern China. I offered to help because I thought there would be language and cultural difficulties. Months later, I got a call from Terri asking if I would do a bit of translating for her. I said yes immediately; I knew at the time that I might never be asked to be a translator for anything. The circumstances were, I think, very interesting. Because the child was well in his childhood and not a baby boy, he had developed learning and basic speech disabilities; the foster parents hinted that he might’ve gotten somehow emotionally damaged at the orphanage that they adopted him from. I don’t know the details, but I suppose that’s what I assumed. Anyway, the foster parents was interested in enrolling him in school here in Livonia. I guess it was quite obvious that he had some barriers that would hinder his normal development at the school. So the school needed to assess his disabilities. The speech pathologist at the school didn’t know any Chinese interpreters so Terri mentioned me.

I met with the speech pathologist and Terri at the school, and I translated the speech pathologist’s instructions in her assessment. It was very interesting, and I felt really bad whenever he got the question wrong. In retrospect, it was a really simple job and I wish I could have that opportunity to do something like that in a longer period of time. Anyway, that was back in December of 2010… Fast forward to yesterday, I finally got paid! Haha! I have a strong tendency to avoid conflicts and I didn’t for the life of me want to go to the school where the speech pathologist works (I barely even remember her name… x_X) to ask her why after all this time I hadn’t gotten paid. Stephanie’s mother actually asked me at least on two occasions if I had gotten paid for it. =/. Must let her know I finally got the paycheck. Hah.

The second errand I had to run today is the Redford Public Library. I went to the Redford Library with Amy to do some work. The goal was to work on our portfolio websites (I had decided to redesign mine), but all I did was browse the internet and lament over how sucky my schedule is for next semester. Anyway, I had to go back there today because I noticed that I couldn’t find the power cord to my laptop last night. But they unfortunately didn’t have it.

The third errand was to the library to return those two volumes of Astonishing X-Men I stayed up reading last night… =/. They were really nicely written as drawn; I enjoyed reading them. I decided not to go to the library near the Livonia Civic Center because I was really getting bored of the collection of books there. Since Livonia has three libraries, I went to the one the further-est from my house, the one I am least familiar with. I got a stack of books, probably won’t read all of them x_x.

Went to the theatre to watch Kungfu Panda 2 with Kaylie. I was about five minutes late to the theatre but Kaylie, who had gotten off work only half an hour ago, was about half an hour later -_-”.

The movie was good, very comedic. Jack Black never ceases to amaze me. The cast for the Kungfu Panda series is a great ensemble. Apart from Jack Black, other big names include Angelina Jolie, David Cross, Jackie Chan, Lucy Liu, to name only a few. With this sequel, another familiar name was added into the credits. Gary Oldman did the voice for the new peacock character, whose name I’ve forgotten -_-. The only reason Gary Oldman is familiar to me is because he played Sirius Black in the Harry Potter series.

Kungfu Panda 2 was quite enjoyable. But I still like the first one better because of its novelty; this new sequel just doesn’t bring in a new dimension to the series. By the way, I am never buying any food at the theatre again! It’s so effing expensive x_X.

After the movie, I came home… Mom lamented on how much money I’m spending by going out while I don’t have a job. She wants me to clean the house more, and do more chores. -_-;. That’s such a mother thing to want for her daughter. =/. Yes I know, awkward sentence.

Okay. Let’s be quick about this. Watched Love in the Wild on NBC after dinner, made a short, tiny trip to Art Van, then came home and watched the Bachelorette episode I missed on Monday. I’m halfway done, will probably finish the rest tomorrow some time.

Lots of things to do tomorrow!

I realized why I don’t blog anymore. It takes too long to type everything! =/

Fear of Anime North Trip

25 May

I’m planning a trip to Anime North right now. Tomorrow morning at 1AM I will take the Greyhound from Windsor, Ontario to Toronto, Ontario for the third time by myself. This is the first time I’ll be attending an anime con. I’ll be going with a group of people including Pei’s friends Adam and Aisha. While I know Pei quite well, I don’t know Aisha or Adam as well as I know Pei.

The others, I am not sure what to expect.

I am afraid that there will be problems on this trip. I am afraid that people won’t like me, that I will have a shitty time while I’m there, while I’m with them. I don’t know how to quell this fear except to realize it by writing about it.

I’m just afraid, but of what I don’t know. It seems to be as if the fears above are merely surface of what I’m really afraid of.

Perhaps I’m just afraid of not being the best I can be. And this is not directly related to others. Perhaps, because I know I haven’t been as great as I was when I had school, I know people will look at me differently.

Since school let out, I haven’t done one thing productive or practical. Since school ended, I don’t have a job anymore, and no method of income. This makes me quite pathetic. Since school let out, I don’t have anything to dedicate myself to. I’ve been feeling lazy and I feel … at times powerless to change it.

This emptiness that I feel has been with me since I finished school around April end. It’s very troubling.

Just learnt to let go of your fear, Lily. Everything will fall into place when you accept yourself. Others will also give you their respect when you accept yourself for you.

I miss the confidence I garnered while I’m at school. Without it, I feel really lost.

Don’t be afraid.

Ignore it.

20 May

Ignore it.

Only you know yourself better than others.

Don’t worry about it.
